As soon as Paul’s party began to preach the gospel of the water and the Spirit in Philippi, another work also followed. On the way to the place of prayer, a slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination appeared, followed them for many days, and cried out. When God works, the devil also works. Because, where the work of the gospel takes place, a work that tries to cloud and block it also takes place, we cannot regard something as the work of the Holy Spirit merely because we hear a voice speaking of God. In this passage, I intend to see where the authority that drove out that voice lay, and what salvation is contained in that name.
