Tertullus spoke long words of thanks to the governor and then accused Paul. Praise toward the governor and condemnation toward Paul followed one after another within a single accusation. Hearing pleasant words first does not make the accusation that follows them true, but people’s hearts are easily moved by the attitude of the speaker and by the agreement of those around them. In this accusation, we must look at what Paul actually preached rather than at the name given to him. People made Paul out to be a man who stirred up dissension, but the Jesus whom Paul preached was the One who, through the baptism He received from John, had all the sins of the world, including the sins of our whole lifetime, transferred to Him once and for all, shed His blood on the Cross and paid the price of those sins, and rose again from death to save sinners. If we miss that difference, we too will end up judging the gospel of the water and the Spirit by people’s assessment.
