Paul called the elders of Ephesus to Miletus and spoke to them both of the word he had preached and of the work they would have to take on from then on. This was because there was something the church had to hold on to even after he left. The faith of the church cannot be kept by keeping one person continually at its side; rather, the church must stand on the gospel of the water and the Spirit that he preached, that is, the gospel of the grace of God, and on the word of the Lord. We too, when we say that we are working for the Church, must examine with what we are caring for souls and whom we are making them follow. In Paul’s exhortation, that standard is clearly revealed.
