Paul, looking at the council, said that he had served God according to his conscience. When he had finished speaking, the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike Paul on the mouth. In the very place where a confession of serving God was being made, a man who claimed to serve God commanded others to strike another person. Just because words about faith are being exchanged, it does not mean that all those words and actions follow the will of God. This scene makes us look back on whom we rely on as we serve God and what we believe. We must find the basis of that faith in the hope of the resurrection that Paul went on to make known.
