The road to Rome that Paul had longed for had begun, but he was not a free traveler. He boarded the ship together with other prisoners after being delivered to a centurion, and he could not decide by his own will alone where to stay or when to leave. This scene, in which a man who wanted to preach the gospel of the water and the Spirit sets out on his way as a prisoner, shows that we must not judge a life of serving the Lord only by its outward circumstances. Paul’s body was bound, but the salvation he believed in and the word he sought to preach did not change.
