When Agabus took Paul’s belt and bound his own hands and feet, what lay ahead for Paul’s party was revealed before them in a visible form. They could not think that they would receive only a welcome if they went up to Jerusalem. How can we explain Paul’s heart, which sought to preach the gospel of the water and the Spirit there even though he knew he would be bound? If we read the text only as the story of one courageous man, we end up trying to produce that courage by our own strength. But only when we first see the fact that Paul lived for the name of the Lord Jesus can we know the strength on which he relied.
